Artists

Mari Skarp

Very interesting work. The artist is working with found materials which I do like to do myself.

''Detritus'' 2008

''The goat'' 2008

Mari Skarp is dealing in her work with memories. How they are created, what triggers them. What is a memory? With the work above she is collecting discarded objects from abandoned farms and from around them. These are kind of artifacts that remind us what and how the farm life used to be. Even the smallest things could bring you back to the place in time that you associate the object with.

Last response for sculpture elctive

At this point I have read a little more about Magdalene Laundry's than I expected to. I have kind of moved away from doing research on the other artists and rather poked in not so distant past.  The fear, pain, hopelessness... Mental and physical abuse, day in day out and in many cases a loss of your child. How can we be so cruel. Years ago I did some research on the topic of Chinese lotus feet. I could not comprehend how the mothers could mutilate their own daughters in the name of being accepted in the society. Well, every nation has its crazy history and plain out idiotic views of what is right and wrong. I wonder if it is even possible to find this perfect medium where one can live  in peace without  making everybody else around miserable.

So here is my response on the topic of the Magdalene Laundry's and the history of our school which used to be one between 1888-1994.

Materials used: bed sheet, sugar solution, acrylic paint mixed with coffee grains, wooden stand and a bowl.

The trees remember.

One could say that watching the paint dry is the most boring thing in the world...maybe... I like the conversation the materials are having, the tension between the colors. I am attempting to freeze in the fabric the memory of what happened to it. The power tainting, corrupting the mind.

The Magdalene Laundry.

The house remembers!
The trees remember!
The ground remembers!

What was it like?

Sex in cold climate

This is a documentary I watched that talks about Magdalene laundry's. The cruelty and abuse the girls had to endure is something I can't even imagine. They were mentally, sexually and physically abused. Overworked, confused and confined with no hope to better your life. Last Magdalene laundry was only closed in 1996 which is just few years ago. I do understand how some rules and regulations are needed to keep order but in my opinion churches and politics are just not humane.
I am bad at articulating my opinions so anybody with further interest about this matter please watch the documentary at following address.

Jay DeFeo
The rose 1958-66
It is astounding that she had the drive to work on one piece for so long, but after reading the background story....well she was one tough lady with such talent. The painting is almost radiating light. The forms appear both rough and delicate the same time. There is just something about it that keeps your eyes locked on it.

25th of February, little rebel.

The bowl that I used to stretch the cotton fabric on kept the shape and one of the tutors pointed out that it was an interesting effect. I actually do agree with him so here are some more dishes served in sugar and colour.

In search of moulding shapes and colour I made this delicious cake.
Ingridients flour, water and wax-mmmm....

I got tired with the dish shapes so here is mountins.
Material cotton fabric, sugar, water and coffee.

Going bigger again.
Material: Thin cotton, sugar, water, coffee and ryeflour.

 Love the texture.

And the last stretch so far.
Hat down to the history of our school.

Artists.

Shelly Bruscar

I like the use of fabrics. It can be left soft and malleable or stiffened into new forms. You can paint on it rip it combine with different materials... quite forgiving material. It would be interesting to try dying the cotton fabric with natural dyes as onion peels and leafs, beetroot.

Bert Bergen

Like islands in the sea these forms from Bert Bergen hold your eye. The texture and form laid out randomly keeping you wondering what it is. It brings me back to playing with tar behind the rabbit cages(which was NOT allowed) or getting my sisters high heels stuck and broken walking 6 km on melting freshly tar covered road.

Sunprint

Beautiful and delicate...nature is such an inspiration, be it the roughness or air light patterns.

Eva Hesse

Eva Hesse is exploring different textures in materials such as latex, fiberglass, plastic.
Her work seems to balance between rough texture and strict spacial organisation.
I love the way the pieces are not framed.
It would be much stronger experience to actually see her work in real exhibition.
I find working especially with fabrics has advantages as it is quite forgiving and malleable.

Some more cool stuff!
String stamps.
Tracy' fabulous string stamp

Great texture.

Sculpture elective. Week one.

We started by brainstorming about the senses:hearing, sight, taste, respiration, blood pressure/pulse and temperature.
I chose verb to stretch that came out of blood pressure/pulse mind map.

The meaning of this verb is wide. You can stretch patience  material, paint, imagination, endurance.
To unstretch which (my laptop confirms) is not even a word would mean somewhat rigidness. Taking away possibilities...

To try out theory of pushing the limits of spreading paint thin on and thorough materials.

 Try on/between cling film

I noticed how ink from my pen traveled faster in some grains of the paper than the rest which gave me an idea to see how thin I can stretch paint on paper and fabric.

Paper

 Hairspray covered silk.

Moist silk and liquid acrylic paint.

Moist cotton liquid fabric acrylic paint searching its way in the grains.

Stretching the paint thinner and spreading multiple colors thorough each other gave me an idea.
Art, fashion objects, furniture even food- everything is looking like anything nowadays. Clothes look like mechanical objects. Furniture like food. Bags like female backsides and food can be art or the other way around. The lines are thinning between what is what.

So here it is...my cake ...new way.
